TRIBUTE TO GLORIA ROBINSON

OUR LEADER, MY FRIEND

Headshot of PBCD founder, Gloria Robinson

In 1976, I met Gloria at a neighbor’s house, and we started a conversation as we were leaving. Gloria told me of her desire to start a Black organization in Petaluma. This organization would be for social purposes to bring Black families together and for us to share Black history and culture with thecommunity. She was concerned that Black history was not taught in the schools. I told her that the idea was interesting, but I didn’t know anyone in Petaluma, other than the people on my street. We exchanged telephone numbers and Gloria called me within the next couple of days. We talked a long time and she told me about the people she knew in Petaluma and in Santa Rosa. I went to several meetings with Gloria in Santa Rosa, she drove, not on the freeway, but back roads. I don’t believe that Gloria drove on the freeway, but she did know her way around the area and was always on the go.

Toward the end of 1977, Gloria was able to arrange a meeting at Casa Grande High School with Black people from Petaluma and members of various organizations, county offices and Santa Rosa’s Black community leaders. After that meeting I knew that Gloria was “well connected”, and I loved the idea that she was committed to her dream.

By 1978, we were on our way as an organization. We had our first Black History Program and we had a picnic with over 50 families. We had a hand printed flyer for the invitation to the picnic and invited every Black person we could find. It was fun for the adults and the children. Some life long friendships were made that day.

Gloria and I remained friends all of these years, working on events for Petaluma Blacks for Community Development, getting involved in community organizations and events and just enjoying life. Gloria has been on more boards and worked within more organizations than I have space to write about.

Gloria Robinson’s legacy will continue for future generations. I will remember her for her commitment to community but also for her commitment to her Faith and living life to its fullest. Gloria and I attended the same church, Petaluma Christian Church for most of the time we have known each other.

The memorial and repast in memory of Gloria will be held at the Veterans Memorial Building in Petaluma on April 17 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a scholarship fund at Petaluma Blacks for Community Development (P O Box 2045, Petaluma, CA 94953) or to the American Cancer Society. Cards can be sent to 79 Michael Dr., Petaluma CA 94954.

Rest in peace, Gloria
